Function

Reno Mattresses are manufactured from double twist hexagonal wire mesh with new polymer coating Polimac, and are supplied 6m x 2m dimensions with a thickness less than 500mm. Reno Mattresses are filled with stones on site to create a flexible, permeable and monolithic structure for use in river and canal bank protection works as well as erosion control and scour protection of slopes. Hydraulic testing of Reno Mattresses has shown that by containing rock within the cells of the mattresses the resistance to rock movement under high flows is dramatically reduced resulting in the use of smaller and less rock for channel lining works. Reno Mattresses are highly permeable making them well suited for promoting the regeneration of plants along water course and in environmentally sensitive sites.

Applications

Reno Mattresses offer a permanent solution for hydraulic applications such as weirs, and for scour protection along riverbanks and embankment stability in channel linings.

Advantages

Maccaferri Reno Mattresses (also known as Castoro Reno Mattreses) have several advantages over other methods of bank stabilisation including a double diaphragm that improves rockfill confinement and therefore structural integrity. Because a Maccaferri Reno Mattress is made from one continuous mesh panel there are no joints to weaken the structure and can be filled onsite or prefilled and placed in position. There is also no need to adjust the diaphragm position, as the alignment is straight. Other advantages include:

  • Improved stability on soil banks
  • Protection of soil from erosion and scour
  • Flexible and versatile to match existing soil profiles
  • New high performance polymer coating, Polimac for durability in a wide range of environments
  • Capable of providing a zone for regeneration of the eco-system

Design Support

To support design of retaining walls, slopes, embankments, hydraulic structures (weirs and channel linings)  and rockfall protection we offer an advanced suite of software free to our clients.

To assist engineers with the design process, the Geofabrics team of engineering specialists are available to give technical advice in the use of the software as well as provide training in-house or via seminars.

Our team can also provide certified design if required.

Installation

Dense quarried stone is normally used to fill Reno Mattresses. To ensure the durability of the structure the rock should be weather resistant, non-friable, insoluble and sufficiently hard. The most appropriate rock size falls in the range of 75 mm to a maximum of two-thirds the thickness of the mattress, or 250 mm, whichever is the lesser. Reno Mattresses can be installed in place or can be crane placed into position. This makes them ideal for use in hydraulic applications for use both under and above water.

Onsite Installation Training

To protect the quality of your project, Geofabrics provides on-site installation training as well as guidelines and diagrams to assist contractors. Our recommended specialist installers can construct sample units on-site before works begin to ensure products are installed as per our recommendations. Once the sample units are approved by engineers or the client, the works can go ahead.

Tool Hire & Purchase

Pneumatic lacing tools are available for hire from your local Geofabrics office for use with woven mesh systems. These tools have been shown to halve assembly time. We also sell lacing rings (“C” rings), and preformed bracing wires that assist in creating a straight Gabion face and speed up the installation process.
