bidim® Eco is a continuous filament nonwoven needle punched geotextile. It is manufactured of 100% recycled polyester from discarded drink bottles. Its versatility sees it used in various applications from separation in road and railway applications, to erosion control under rock armour in rivers, to use behind retaining structures, to subsoil drainage in roads, residential sites and sports fields, to liner protection in waste containment. These high-performance geotextile provide significant advantages in civil engineering applications.

The bidim® Eco range of geotextile is manufactured in South Africa from 100% recycled polyester in an ISO 9001:2015 accredited facility. As such they have distinct advantages over other synthetic fibre geotextiles to be part of the circular economy journey.

Function

Drainage

Excess moisture has a major influence on the performance of pavements. The advantage of bidim® Eco is the rapid removal of moisture at rates greater than most natural materials.

Separation

The perfect solution for soft and unstable soils. Our bidim® Eco geotextile can be used to separate the soft ground from the granular fill material; thus increasing the life of the road and reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Filtration

bidim® Eco is highly porous; allowing water to pass through while preventing soil migration. bidim® Eco geotextiles will be more cost effective than natural filters when used in revetment and subsoil drainage projects.

Protection

Using heavyweight bidim® Eco nonwoven geotextiles in landfills extends the life of the lining system by protecting it from punctures and excessive deformation. The geotextile acts as a cushioning and stress relieving layer, minimising the chances of leakage in the long term. Needle free geotextiles are commonly specified in landfill and containment applications to prevent damage to the underlying liner.

Applications

Roads and Highways

Nearly every road built today uses a nonwoven geotextile, to provide separation and filtration under the road formation. The ingress of water transporting fines into road pavements has a major influence on its performance; therefore the filtration of fines being transported from the subgrade and the rapid removal of excess water from the pavement formation is of the utmost importance.

bidim® Eco is an isotropic geotextile - meaning it has similar strength properties in all directions. Standard road construction practice requires the inclusion of road edge drainage systems which incorporate geotextiles; in order to optimise the performance of these drains a geotextile with high flow rates is desirable.

The three dimensional structure of the nonwoven geotextile provides numerous flow paths, with the result that bidim® Eco geotextiles allow water to flow at rates which exceed most natural materials it is placed in contact with. bidim® Eco geotextile fully meets the New Zealand Transport Agency F7 Specification for Geotextiles, offering a unique proposition to road authorities to be part of the circular economy journey.

Rail Formation

Geotextiles are commonly used in the rail sector to separate the capping layer form the ballast layer, providing separation and filtration.

Embankments

High quality fill material can become contaminated when it is placed directly in contact with a soft or poor quality ground; the result being a loss of performance of the fill material. In order to limit the contamination and subsequent strength loss, geotextiles are used to separate the two distinct materials. Construction in this environment can place the geotextile separator under high stress with forces from rock placement and equipment loads needing to be transferred into the poor quality material. bidim® Eco geotextiles are ideal for this application as it combines high elongation with high strength to provide unsurpassed toughness and survivability characteristics.

Liner Protection

Heavy duty geotextiles are used to prevent damage to impermeable liners designed to contain harmful liquors in landfill and mining applications; the design of the liner system needs to limit the chance of punctures during installation and reduce the risk of long term stress cracking of the geomembrane. Needle free geotextiles are commonly specified in liner protection applications to help prevent damage to the liner.

Advantages

  • Better modulus of deformation
  • Better plastic yield stability (creep)
  • Higher breaking strength
  • Better resistance to high temperatures (melting point 260⁰C)
  • Less sensitivity to light (UV degradation)
  • Better wettability

Installation

bidim® geotextile rolls are packaged in a UV stabilised, tight plastic wrapping. Each roll has a label on the ends identifying the grade, width, length and unique roll number.

bidim® geotextile rolls may contain a join over the roll length. Such rolls will be identified by a ‘JOIN’ sticker on the packaging. The roll dispensing direction is indicated by an arrow sticker on the packaging.

Site handling and storage practices should be such that exposure to conditions which may reduce or alter the geotextile properties are minimised.

Rolls are supplied in small despatches on a utility with racks and larger consignments are transported to site on a flat bed truck or semi trailer. Rolls can be unloaded using a forklift, spreader bar or end ‘carpet’ prong.

Installation can be assisted with the use of a Geofabrics supplied.
