Maccaferri Gabion baskets are rectangular wire mesh cages manufactured from double twisted hexagonal mesh that are site filled with hard durable rock to form an earth retaining structure. Gabions can be used in a variety of different applications from mass gravity retailing walls in highway projects to architectural feature walls. Their origins date back to 1894 when they were used for flood repair works and this long history of use is a testament to the reliability that Geofabrics offers its clients. Gabions form flexible retaining structures that can accommodate differential settlements. They are also permeable eliminating the main cause of instability of soil retaining structures. Gabions have also been shown to provide a good balance between engineering requirements and environmental considerations for earth retaining walls in rivers, along roads and railways.




Maccaferri Gabion baskets are a rectangular wire mesh box made from double twisted hexagonal mesh of steel wire, additionally reinforced by selvedges of heavier wire. Maccaferri Gabions are available with different levels of coating protection for durability in a wide range of environments and climatic conditions. Gabions are manufactured from Galmac (Zn-5%AL MM alloy) coated wire that offers around three times greater protection than zinc coated wire gabions. Where gabion baskets come in contact with more aggressive environments, then an additional polymer protective coating is applied over the Galmac coating to maximise the level of protection.


Gabions are delivered to site flat-packed, where upon they are assembled, lifted into position, and filled with a hard durable rock. Hard dense round or quarried stone in the size range of 100mm to 250 is normally used to fill gabion baskets. The modular nature of gabions means that it can be used in a vast array of applications and configurations such as retaining walls for commercial, industrial and road projects. Gabions are also used for erosion control, bank stabilisation, channel linings, and weirs.
